Q&A: Has my identity been stolen? What should I do?

Question by Lazyitis: Has my identity been stolen? What should I do?
I searched my name on one of those free people search things, www.veromi.net for example, and it had my family listed as relatives and several towns I have lived in, but also several towns I’ve never even been to. It also lists roommates/associates and it had one correct former roommate and two people I’ve never heard of. I have great credit, so nobody has ruined me, but it scares me that these other towns and people are listed.

How do I check further into this? What should I do?

  1. Maybe you are not the only person with your name.
I know there are a few people with my name (which is unusual).
Look into their middle names and their ages also before becoming alarmed.

  2. Those sites are not notarized. :)

They have some info and make up the rest.

  3. The first thing I would do is get a hold of a credit report, you can get one for free annually at annualcreditreport.com . Look it over to see if their is anything that doesn’t add up. From there i would contact the number of the credit report issuer (experian, trans union, or equifax) and they will be able to start helping you further with your concerns. Also check your accounts, credit cards, bank accts, etc…

This happens to everyone. If your name is the same or a close likeness, then information can be added as possible. It sucks, I did a check of my credit and had to get a free credit report to have information deleted.
If you signed your name as Karen W. lawrence and the used a K >w lawrence or any derivative of said name, they report it as an AKA.
It is best to check the freecreditreport.com site as by law you can have a free copy sent to you every year.
The credit report will be pages of information and scores from the credit company(s).
The report tells you what exists and how your graded, good credit to poor and why.
You have a right to write to the company to sy this is me, this is not me, this is a correct reporting this one is not.
The credit company has 30 days to send you a written reply about how or what actions it took to adjust your credit report.
All this is covered under 15 USC 1681 (SEE wikipedia: Fair credit reporting Act)
